Tara is a Boston-based
dancer and choreographer who specializes in the classical Indian
dance techniques of Kuchipudi and Bharat Natyam. She has performed
and taught in Colombia, Brazil, Turkey, India and the U.S. In 2003
she performed in the FleetBoston Celebrity Series, dancing
the title role in the critically acclaimed "Chitra." Tara
founded and directed Lasandhi Dance Theater, which had its final
performance at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in 2003. Her
television appearances include WGBH's DanceFest 2003 and
WGBH's Greater Boston Arts in 2001. Some of the venues
where she has performed are Sanders Theater (Cambridge, MA), Miller
Theater (Manhattan, NY), Bogazici Universite, (Istanbul, Turkey),
Amritanandyamayi Ashram, (Kerala, India).
Tara is on the roster of the Creative Arts & Sciences Council
of the Newton Public Schools, and was selected to perform at the
2003 New England Art & Education Conference in Hyannis, MA.
She has taught and lectured for schools and organizations including
the Boston Ballet, Adrien Block Middle School (Queens, NY), Devereux
Glenholme School (Washington, CT), Groundwerx Movement Center (Providence,
RI), Holy Cross College (Worcester, MA) and Natyalaya Escola de
Dancas Classicas Indianas (Sao Paulo, Brazil).
Tara is currently
semi-retired; she now gives lecture/demonstrations in schools and
cultural institutions.
Tara studied with Neena
Gulati at the Triveni School of Dance in Brookline, MA and with
Anuradha Jonnalagadda in Hyderabad, India. She studied Modern
Dance at the Harvard Summer Dance School, and holds a cum laude
Bachelor's Degree in Dance Anthropology from the University
of Massachusetts, Amherst. She also studied West African dance
and spent a year in Dakar, Senegal. In 2003 she completed
an apprenticeship in Japanese taiko drumming and continues to study
and perform with Odaiko New England.
